male hair loss can reduce the risk of prostate cancer

Hair loss is something men all across the world fear, however, it seems there is an upside to losing your locks. New research has revealed that those who start to go bald at an early age have a drastically reduced chance of getting prostate cancer later in life.

Although half of all men face a hairless future by the age of 50, it is believed that the high levels of testosterone that cause hair loss actually lowers the risk of tumours.

The study looked at 2,000 men all aged between 40 and 47, half of which had suffered prostate cancer.

The scientists compared the rate of tumours in men whose hair began to thin out when they were around 30 years of age, with men who did not suffer any hair loss.

The results showed that men who had a receding hairline or bald patch on the top of their heads had the least risk of getting cancer.

Despite the potential health benefits, the emotional repercussions of hair loss can be significant. Hair loss is a source of concern for many young men, with surveys showing nearly half think going bald makes them feel old and less attractive while three out of four have self esteem problems.
